International Service
International Service exemplifies the Global Reach of Rotary International in promoting peace & understanding around the world. Rotary volunteers work to expand the Rotarians humanitarian work around the world. This important service includes Rotary Club sponsorship of projects in other countries and works with international partners to support projects in their communities. Thus, the St Simons Club support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.
International Service also offers Rotarians an opportunity for international fellowship with an important difference– humanitarianism.
There is no one-way to carry out an International Service project. When it comes to implementing a project, creativity and imagination are the keys to success. Projects may be as diverse as the construction of a public restroom facility where none were available prior to building an aquaponics system at a school in the jungles of Guatemala or providing water wells in remote areas of Uganda that serve 15,000 inhabitants.
Rotary International encourages Rotary clubs to develop projects that address priority needs identified by the communities they serve, to help people help themselves, and to ensure projects are environmentally sustainable.
The Rotary Club of St Simons Island has a long record of participation in projects in many areas around the world. We have served as the International Partner club on Projects in Brazil and Puerto Rico, and we have been generous financial supporters of many more projects in India and elsewhere. We have also sponsored our own project in Glynn County.
MAP International
To a person who has lost everything, something as simple as a toothbrush or shampoo can mean all the difference in the world.
MAP’s signature Disaster Health Kits (DHKs) support one person living in a shelter for an entire week. MAP DHKs include antiseptic wipes, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other essential items such as basic first aid supplies to help prevent secondary illnesses and even death.
Most of all, it lets those devastated by a disaster know that others have not forgotten them in the middle of their great loss.
Our club participates in packing these DHK’s on a regular basis.
